breaking with long-standing tradition, this is a site associated with my real name.
i'm not sure what brought on this bout of internet honesty, perhaps expatriation and the
accompanying isolation, but here i am. never mind the fact that this is a knitting blog and
i would be hard-pressed to do any permanent damage here...unless i start knitting up corsetry
out of black plastic bags. ha. if anything comes out skimpy it's merely due to an honest attempt
to save money on yarn. certain members of the household just can't seem to understand the ease
with which i could (*could*, if given leave) justify the buying of exquisite bits of string.
anyway. i am a novice, to say the least. i have pieced together a sweater, a skirt, two dozen scarves
and hats, and have many balls of wool hanging off of various sizes of sticks lying about, but i find
i am falling prey to what ails me in any quasi-artistic endeavor -- the need to 'experiment'. if nothing
else, this blog should provide the occasional amusement of documentation of my creative disasters. this, however,
is where yarn wins: unlike paint, spices, fabric, etc., when unconvinced of the merit of ones knitting, one
can simply say, 'ribbit' and start again.
etc
these should link to places, but i haven't the patience. this is more a silly experiment into how much
one can reveal about oneself through the medium of colorful buttons.

| First Christmas Craft of the Season |
[01 October, '07] |

Is that not the happiest fabric you've ever seen? I love it anyway. I got a fat quarter of it, and after deciding that I couldn't properly work it into a quilt pattern, I had the idea of making a christmas card holder. See pics: ( here )
A fat quarter is 18" X 22", so I cut out a piece of cardboard to 16X20, cut a piece of batting a bit bigger, then layered the fabric over the two, stapling it all down in place at the edges. Then I placed the ribbons and stapled them as well. I sewed around the edge through all layers and removed the staples. The buttons were then sewn on, again through all layers. I glued ribbon around the edge to cover the stitching. I was just going to glue a piece of cardboard to the back and call it good, but my sense of aesthetics got the better of me, and I wrapped another fat quarter of fabric around a piece of cardboard that measured 15.5 X 19.5. I glued the front to the back and sat a dining chair on it to keep it flat as it dried.
Seems to have worked out ok, though a few changes to method would have made it look neater--first, I'd cut the batting to be only the tiniest tinge bigger than the cardboard. Second, I'd glue the front pieces rather than staple. Third, I'd choose a different glue, because this one was stretchy and gummy and horrid. Hmm. I think that's it. It holds cards and shows the cute kitty, so I suppose it was a success.

As you can see, the pasty british skin is coming along nicely. This is Jenna Adorno's 'Hopeful.'
Knitty's 'Grace' in Noro Silver Thaw.

| This and that |
[28 June, '06] |
I haven't been thinking much about blogland and such. We submitted our paperwork to the home office and hopefully in a few weeks we'll be permanent residents. I've been trying to stomp down the (what I'm hoping is) associated anxiety.
Tomorrow I'm getting a dishwasher, and yesterday I got a wardrobe and tallboy. It feels so committal and housy. Of course, said items were from ebay and the charity shop. In this country, such ways of buying things are so commonplace that you can pretend that you're thrifty instead of just po'.
I have been working on some knitting when I find a moment to sit on the couch. I'm using the Grace pattern on Knitty as a guide and using Noro Silver Thaw. I'm even managing to match the stripes in my bad-addled brain-state. With this yarn, it's actually sort of guess and check. I find that if I wait until I see the first hint of a new color to demarcate the stripes, I have better luck. Hmm. That girl who made that pattern surely is cute.

| Kool-aid Rawk |
[09 June, '06] |
The kids' god-dad is getting married this summer, and they're keen to make him something. I had some british DK-weight wool hanging about on a cone:

A rather non-descript pale blue 2-ply. However, with the addition of a dylon bath for a gradient, and the kool-aid my sister sent, this would hopefully change:

The kids turned out to be quite adept at variegated dyeing:

Ready for nuking (their bio-dad would be appalled, as Cody would know, hehe):

And here's our finished hank:

Cody said the couple's favored color is purple. This may not be purple enough, but he can stick it, I mean he can say as much and we'll correct it. We've got about 100 grams, now the question is what to make.

| bties* no. 93 or so |
[30 May, '06] |
*bties=best thing i ever saw. Which is here. Hehe. It's funny because it's deadly.
So we went to Lochore Meadows. Nyssa lost a tooth and bled all over the cafe. We and the avian inhabitants sized each other up; we left the feathers on the ground this time around. Joseph's happy skipping through the meadow was rewarded with a twisted ankle. We had public transportation indecision and walked many miles as a result. We discovered Lochgelly is nice aside from a strange tendency to quite randomly smell of ass. I discovered that old school American Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies have taken up residence in the UK in the form of Viscounts. All in all, a good day. Not so much KIP-ing as intended though.

..a supplier. Oh, the dodginess.
Actually, I've been idly considering dyeing/weaving/sewing/etc.fibery crafts to do with the kids, and these people might have what I need. Nice chunky alpaca-rich wool.

| FO and a website |
[27 May, '06] |
I've been meaning to make a hat out of sari silk. This evening I finally did one whilst watching the evening comedy. I don't normally crochet, but I was lazy..I should have put some lipstick on that pallid face..ew.

Was also led to a brilliant website called Wists. So much more useful than a clogged bookmark folder. Here's mine. Brilliant timewaster.

| Strange Experience and a FO |
[25 May, '06] |
I was trying to watch Vorderman's Big brain game (*sigh*..I rock the math part, but the memory part...oi) and there was a bright light obscuring my view. I turned around, and it was the setting sun, sans the usual cloud cover. Many of you will say, "mmhmm..so?" Well, that just doesn't tend to happen where I live--I actually had to go close the curtains. *shakes head in a bemused sort of way*
And here we have a scarf, simple garter and dropped-stitch mohair scarf of many colors.
